Documenting the style-scape of Lagos, Nigeria

BEAUTY IN LAGOS.

Post title is not just because my subject is an obvious beauty in Lagos, but also because I discovered in my web traipsing that she is the brain behind the blog and brand called BEAUTY IN LAGOS.

Fin.

Cheers :)

LITTLE LAGOSIAN.

Lost files.

I just bumped into her photos and it's infectious isn't it?

Her smile?

Cheers :)

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING.

So I was walking past reception at work and looked up at the TV. It was some breaking news, Turkey had just shot down a Russian plane for violating Turkish airspace. Understandably Vladmir isn't very pleased about this and has made it clear there will be harsh consequences.

Sigh...

I went back to the task of negotiating contracts and after a while, took an internet break to check on the latest news.
Back on home soil, it's being reported that Biafran agitators are threatening some unrest in Lagos.

WHY IS EVERYONE SO ANGRY?

This lad I photographed a few months back...I'm not typically a slogan tee shirt kind of person but this one is so apt!

Apply it locally. Apply it globally.

Just be human first before slicing yourself into parts based on nationality, tribe, religion, denomination, race or gender.

Be human.

FOR MYSELF.

(For now at least) I'm very glad to be doing this for myself.

I don't have someone telling me what they want me to do and how they would rather see my subjects look in the pictures.

What I like is what you see. Who I like is who you see.

Although I strive for continuous improvement, occasionally I will fail.
And that's okay by me.

Because sometimes a little selfishness is good for the soul.

I liked her....obviously...

Cheers (as much as you possibly can on a Monday)!

THE HAPPY PATROL...STILL.

No, sorry, I will not refrain from the topic of happiness.

No, I'm not trying to live in denial to the reality of the current happenings in Nigeria and worldwide.

But yes, I have had enough of discussing death and destruction and the downturn of my industry (I work as an oil and gas lawyer, in case you're new here).

Yes, I have had enough of the doom and gloom.

Yes, I will continue to link my photos to my insistence on traveling through life on a conscious but happy patrol.

IN PRAISE OF HAPPY.

I posted some weeks ago that "Happy Is The New Rich".

I would really like to maintain some focus on the elements of joy that can be found in the current state of the world today.

I hope her smile is as contagious for you as it was for me.

Cheers.

BELT OR BRACES?

I'm happy with either but when a man chooses braces (or suspenders to some of you on the other coast), it adds a certain old-soul charm to the ensemble.

Add a smart "man bag" and I'm got. Completely got.

Cheers :)

BLURRED LINES.

The reason I particularly like this look is because it blurs the lines between unaffected-undone and girlishness (by virtue of all that pink).

Cheers :)

ROLES.

My role on this day was to be a style hunter.

His was to be a subliminally willing prey for my camera.

Worked out pretty well for both of us I think.

HUMANS.

Man made peril everywhere I turn.

All of this destructiveness fills me with such disdain.

Whatever you can do to make another person smile today, just do it.

Humans, please be good to one another.

Because kindness will ALWAYS be in style.

OUR WAX PRINT.

Our wax print, popularly called Ankara.

It's a delight to see the versatility with which it's approached by my Lagos style conscious crowd.

A pant suit in Ankara....why not?

Cheers.

J.T.O.

Not an acronym I made up like my previous post.

This is actually her name and brand.

While I appreciate the qualitative simplicity of her outfit, I was very much drawn to her footwear. I imagine it's from some high end designer...she's made of that blue blood that would suggest that :)

It's all rather pretty.

Enjoy :)

B.A.W.

Beautiful African Woman.

(UN)ARMED.

I wish I got a better quality version of this photo...it tells me that sometimes, photographers simply make peace with their surroundings and lay down their arms.

THAT FRIDAY FEELING.

So vibrantly pretty, and there was a spring in her step.

There're currently several springs in my step...it's that Friday feeling :)

Cheers to the freakin' weeken'!

THE COOL CROWD.

This crowd that very nearly intimidated the rest of the world with their happy-go-lucky easy-breezy style attitudes.

URBAN WITH A SIDE OF FUNKY.

I think everyone has a coherent message with how they dress themselves.

And if you're fortunate to have a life co-pilot whose style memorandum is similar, then I will be photographing you.

Mr. Urban and Mr. Funky.

Cheers :)

HARD OR HOME.

With reference to the popular saying "Go hard OR Go home!"

I have seen a few other street style features of these guys and they have generated quite a debate on the spate of menswear progressively bordering on the effeminate.

Okay people, it was fashion week. Why would they be anything but head-turning over the top and fabulously fashion forward?

I for one gave a silent applause in recognition of their bold style statements.

If you're going to be at any fashion week, the saying is sure...
Go hard OR most definitely go home.

Unless you're a street style hunter, whereby nobody is overly concerned about your style choices...and just basically ignores your presence as you lurk about the entrances and exits...essentially...unless you're ME.

Enjoy :)

GRACE.

Just because everything about her in this picture is so graceful.

SWEET TALKING.

My soul sister said to me the other day that she's always amazed and amused at the post titles I come up with.

But but but...the people I photograph make it so easy.

My style subject here ...she's got a microphone in one hand, a lollipop in the other.

Sweet. Talking.

TEXT SPEAK.

I grew up with a father who spoke exceptionally good English and fluent Latin.
He was in the military, had fought in a few wars, was a first class student in school, at work and well...in life.

He had zero tolerance to poor grammar, spoken and written.

He died 16 years ago but his legacy lives.

I cannot even begin to imagine how he would react to the current "text-speak" epidemic. Nobody wants to spell "you" anymore. It's all "Luv u" and "Ow r u"... what do these people do with all the time they save anyway?

If you text me with that, I cannot reply.
Okay I can. I mean I'm not disabled.
But I will not.

Let's keep proper grammar sexy.

In speech and in text.

Till death do us part.

FIA FACTORY.

Fia Factory is on the list of #BuyNigerian current faves.

I traipsed over to Grey Velvet at lunch time to check on their pieces. My size was not in store. Maybe some other time then.

This pretty shift is one of theirs.
The print and shape gives me the whimsical retro inspiration.

Nice, no?
