Documenting the style-scape of Lagos, Nigeria

JOZI SIGHTS.

I would love to do more documentary style photography. That was actually my first love before I noticed the streets had became a runway show.

I spent a day about Johannesburg today and photographed a few bits and bobs that took my interest.

Jo'burg is indeed a melting pot of all kinds of faces, places and events.

Now I must apologise for the lack of picture quality. I didn't bring my fancy camera with me as I didn't really plan to do lots of photography...re 2 posts back where I mentioned my mission in Jo'burg was to eat, sleep and then eat some more...

Here are my sightings.

Just snippets of.

Cheers.

SIWIZZLE...SOUTH AFRICA.

Sometimes you meet someone so bubbly and full of life and you wonder if they're that way in the moment or they're that way full stop.

I meet her at Rosebank Mall, Jo'burg this afternoon and ran up to her as I was about to miss my City Sights Tour Bus...my approach was a tad invasive to be honest and I would have understood if she'd given a cold no to my request to feature her.

But she was pleasant, full of laughter and just a delight to photograph.

My gut tells me she's that way.
Full stop.

MY SWEAT LIFE SOUTH AFRICA.

I'm currently in Johannesburg for the holidays. Spending quality time with family for some much needed R&R...and in my books R&R is never complete without a ridiculous amount of foooood.

So we went to Nando's. Lord knows I've missed Nando's...it used to be the high street spot we Africans (and several of my Asian pals too) would go to for that extra spicy food that can be deemed closest to "home" cooking.

My tummy is at this moment very happy, and love handles are showing up...sigh.

And then I bumped into this gorgeous being. She had pretty much the same order as I. Difference was no love handles.

I took her photo, had a chat with her and now I know why she's got her bod so right.

She's on Instagram as @mysweatlife_za as a wellness enthusiast.
Her motto being "health and fitness over everything".

That'll be me.

After the holidays ;)

HAIRY BUSINESS.

Listen.

Men.

Adorn your hair with some consideration for the female form and our need to peacock our hair-dos without competition from your gender.

I mean...how is this so perfectly done?

Lawd, we love it!

TG JONAH.

She was the gift that kept on giving at Fashion Week.

Layers of style.

Toyosi.

FRESH.

Spotted these two young ladies, fresh and pretty and dressed to the beat of their own drum.

No falsification or apparent duplication here.

Just simple and effective personal expression of style.

MR. UDUKU.

Met him in Ghana for the first time and we had a conversation that same evening like we were family.

Here's my newest brother, Mr. Uduku, so unique in approach so simple in ambition but so unique in approach.

Watch this space everyone.

He's on his way to revive comfort zones.

THIS CHRISTMAS.

I'm still on that campaign to ask all my readers to please go on and find a way to put a smile on someone's face this Christmas.

You know the world needs it.

Cheers as you do.

GRACE ALEX.

There's an interesting new crop of young women who I observe on social media for their multi dimensional approach to living, working and thriving.

Take Grace.

She's a beautiful personal style blogger, she imparts knowledge at a University, she's a shoe label owner, a contributing clothes designer and she just represents her own brand of real realness.

Her Instagram posts consistently prove that beyond her effortless beauty and style, lies a young woman who's fearless in her opinions and will quite boldly call out the bull duty in Nigeria's bourgeois fashion industry, at the times the duty does stink.

Whether she's discussing style or trends, or her cute obsession for Korean drama, or more sombre issues like depression (hang in there darling!), there is naked truth in her portrayals.
A refreshing shift from the norm of "fashion bloggers".

What a time to be alive, a time when women have not just the ability, but the freedom to do more and be more.

Grace and a few other young ladies of her ilk impress me to no end and I consistently find myself smiling when I can share the snippets of their lives they allow the general public into.

Here's Grace at different days of the 2016 Lagos Fashion & Design Week.

Cheers.

HAIR WE GO!

I've used this post title before...2 years ago I think...however one cannot be blamed for recycling in this instance.

The hair on this woman is standing tall and powerful.

Love it!

MEASURED SUCCESS.

It's almost Christmas.

I bet you know one family or maybe one person who can do with a heartfelt good gesture this season.

If you're in the fortunate position to make it happen, please do it.

Someone said success is measured by the (positive) impact you make on people's lives.

Be successful.

God bless.

ZAINAB BALOGUN.

Just saw the movie, The Wedding Party last night.

Zainab, my style subject pictured here, was cast as the wedding planner. What a hilarious character she turned out to be.

If you haven't seen the movie and could do with a good laugh,  go see it.

Cheers.

HOT!

Can I just take a moment to lament this heat wave?

37 degrees Celsius today in the city of Lagos.

Too hot!

NOT LOST.

There's a side of fashion that is thankfully not lost in the "business" of it all.

It leans more towards fun and spontaneity and it makes for excellent and genuine street style.

These three embody that side.

HAPPY GIRLS = PRETTIEST.

It's been said that happy girls are the prettiest.

As I mull over the senseless loss of lives over the last few days from Istanbul to Brazil to Uyo, here in Nigeria, it's difficult to consider the luxury of "feeling pretty".

When will we humans just get it right and shun hatred, dangerous mediocrity and bigotry?

When will we just love hard?

I hope wherever you are, you find a reason or reasons to stay happy and invariably, stay pretty.

Cheers.

Cheers.

BAGGY EYES.

Applause for creative minds who think to adorn items so that they do not merely exist to be functional .
